Why donate blood?
One blood donation can help save the lives of up to three patients. It is estimated that nine out of ten people who live to age 70 will require a blood transfusion and almost everyone over 16 can donate blood, but only about 5% of those who can give blood ever do. See how your donation can make a difference. Also, the blood supply is very low, so Florida Blood Services (FBS) needs a lot of healthy blood intact in order to continue their work.
What is our goal?
Our goal is for SHPE to be a source of blood donation. We will set it at 100 pints each time and try to reach it every school year. Also, we encourage individuals to set their own goals.
Any benefits?
Of course the main benefit is to save a life, yet FBS is always offering drinks and T-shirts. On top of that, they can check your blood (eg iron count) for free, and usually give free coupons from Chick-Fil-A where you can have free sandwiches. Also, each time we reach our goal (100 pints), we will have a party with all those who donated. There will be a grand prize for the major donor.
What do I have to do and when do we start?
SHPE wants to make this an ongoing activity, so we start right away and never end! In order to donate blood, visit Cooper Hall either Tuesdays or Thursdays and walk in. To track how much blood was donated, let us know and we will have a log.
